Ghanaian rapper Obibini Boafo has mentioned that it feels like an insult that after all his years of contributing to rap, he has never won a single award.
In an interview on Hitz FM, the rapper claimed there is a hidden agenda in the industry working against him.
He explained that although he has been nominated twice at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in the Best Rap Performance category, he walked away empty-handed both times.
‘The creative industry is fake, there is a cabal running it’ – Obibini
Obibini argued that it is unjust for any awards scheme in Ghana to ignore his work, noting that his artistry deserve recognition. He described himself as “the Shakespeare of rap.”
“I have had two nominations but I just feel like it is a way they just want to tap me on the back and go like ‘we see you.’ But I mean it’s quite an insult for someone like me to be around now and then no award has been awarded to me. Because this is Obibini we are talking about. I am the Shakespeare of this thing,” he said.
Obibini is respected by rap enthusiasts and industry watchers, who often rank him among Ghana’s finest lyricists.
His wordplay and lyrical content have kept him relevant in conversations about authentic rap in the country.
The rapper, who was previously signed to Zylofon Music, has built an impressive catalogue over the years with hit songs such as. The Statement, Let Me Know, Ahye Me featuring KiDi, The Dream, Balenciagas, Get A Life, and Yes Dada.
