Dr Frank Amoakohene is the Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene is the Ashanti Regional Minister

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has urged stakeholders within the Ghanaian movie industry to take deliberate steps to cultivate interest in local content among Senior High School (SHS) students.

Speaking at the National Film Dialogue organised by the National Film Authority (NFA) on September 16, 2025, Dr Amoakohene said he was worried that many young people were losing connection with indigenous movies and creative works.

The minister proposed that one way to reverse the situation is to make Ghanaian movies freely available to students at the SHS level.

He explained that introducing high school students to local films would help build a sustainable audience base for the industry.

The regional minister said by the time these students progress to tertiary institutions, they would already have developed an attachment to local content and would be willing to pay for them.

Government reaffirms commitment to Creative Arts sector

Dr Amoakohene further mentioned that his responsibility as a regional minister goes beyond politics, as it includes ensuring that all sectors under his jurisdiction thrive, including the creative arts.

“Most of the young ones, especially at the SHS level going down, they are losing touch with our local contents. So, the film in school, I think that is one area we should put more emphasis on. And instead of letting them be at that level, we can offer it for them for free so that they will be addicted to the local content.

“Once they get to the university level, where they are able to, at least be able to afford the GH¢20, the GH¢50, we can change them over there because they are already addicted to our local content. So, I think that we should look at the SHS level well and see how best we will be able to catch them young and also get them stay with our industry.

“With this said, and as regional minister, I want to assure you that our work is such that you have to make sure all sectors of your region flourish and that includes the creative sector. I want to assure all stakeholders that you have our fullest support as a region,” he stated.
