Amid recent discussions about whether the Nigerian movie industry was responsible for the popularity of Ghanaian actors, veteran actor Adjetey Anang has stated that such claims are not entirely accurate.

While Kofi Adjorlolo described such statements as disrespectful, Adjetey Anang believes the truth lies in acknowledging the mutual benefits both industries gained from their collaborations.

‘We have the talent and content to succeed’ – Adjetey Anang on Ghana’s movie industry

In an interview on Hitz FM, Adjetey Anang explained that the large Nigerian audience and the involvement of its A-list actors helped to push the visibility of Ghanaian actors.

According to him, working with Nigeria’s A-list actors gave Ghanaian talents exposure.

He mentioned, however, that the collaboration between both industries worked in favour of both sides.

He further noted that before Nigeria made progress in the film space, Ghana was regarded as the front-runner in the industry, especially in terms of technical know-how and artistry.

‘It’s unwise for actors to step out and demonstrate’ – Adjetey Anang

He also said that over time, Nigeria overtook Ghana on several levels.

While he admitted that Nigeria had a role in strengthening Ghana’s movie industry, Adjetey Annan noted that saying Nigerian industry made Ghanaian actors popular is an oversimplification.

“Let’s be fair, when we started the collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria, it sort of lifted our image a bit because of their numbers and some of the A-list actors out there.

“You know that Nigerian does things on a big scale and therefore that synergy between us and them lifted both industries to a certain level, so they had a role to play as far as that is concerned.

“But other than that, I think that a lot of inspiration they took from us; whether technical or even artistic, we were the front leaders then and they made their strides and overtook us in a lot of levels. So, on that front, we can’t take that away from them that they had a role to play in building our industry,” Adjetey Anang stated.
