Ghanaian-American filmmaker Leila Djansi has shared how the production of the popular American movie, “The Woman King” slipped through her fingers.

In an interview with Hitz FM shared on X on September 9, 2025, Leila Djansi noted that she was supposed to produce the much-talked-about project in Ghana; however, the project was snatched from her by South Africans.

She explained that due to a lack of ultramodern equipment in the country, the project fell into the hands of South Africans.

“The Woman King was supposed to be shot here. I was actually supposed to produce The Woman King, but somehow South Africa took over. But they did shoot in Ghana, but it was only a role in the castle,” she said.

‘I will collapse all guilds in the film industry when given the chance’ – Leila Djansi

She further noted that she felt disappointed and annoyed after the movie was produced in South Africa.

According to Leila Djansi, she could have done a good job because the storyline for the movie resonated better with Ghanaians than South Africans.

“I was really disappointed, but South Africa had the edge, so they were able to take it. I was really offended… Benin is right here, the Volta region, and Togo are right here, and they are one people,” she added.
