Nigerian pastor and relationship coach, Kingsley Okonkwo, has sparked debate online after stating that it is not biblical for men to bear the responsibility of taking care of women.

In a viral video from a recent sermon at his David Christian Centre, the pastor argued that the idea of men solely providing for women is cultural, not scriptural.

“That thing is a cultural idea, it’s not biblical. The Bible says he who does not work should not eat,” Okonkwo said.

He further questioned why some women expect men to provide for them when they were surviving before marriage. According to him, well-raised daughters should be educated, empowered, and financially stable rather than depending on men for survival.

“Before you married, how were you surviving? All this is poor people’s talk. Parents who raise their daughters well will send them to the best schools and will ensure they have good jobs. They won’t leave them to the mercy of the boys,” he said.

Okonkwo also criticised fathers who fail to provide adequately for their daughters, leaving them to depend on men for basic needs.

“Imagine being a father and your daughter is asking for money before she goes on a date. How would you feel as a father?” he asked.

He called on women to avoid burdening their partners with unnecessary demands, stating, “What your father cannot do, you want to put the weight on a young man who just started life,” he added.

His comments have since stirred strong reactions on social media, with many debating traditional gender roles in marriage and relationships.
