Ghanaian musician and songwriter Kuami Eugene has mentioned that he has no intention of selling his music catalogue, despite the trend of some artistes cashing out by giving up the rights to their songs.

According to him, his songs still hold value, and he sees no reason to part ways with them.

In an interview on Asaasepa, Kuami Eugene explained that artistes usually decide to sell their catalogues when they feel their music has lost its relevance and no longer generates value for them.

EXPLAINER: Why artistes sell their music catalogues

In such cases, they take a large upfront payment in exchange for their songs.

The singer pointed to his songs such as Angela, Open Gate, and Wish Me Well as songs that are still performing well on streaming platforms.

For that reason, he questioned why he would give them up when they are still earning him revenue.

Kuami Eugene also noted that the decision is not his alone to make. Since he created most of his music while signed to a record label, the ownership of his songs is shared, which means he cannot sell them without approval from others involved.

EXPLAINER: What you need to know about ‘publishing and master rights’ in music

The artiste further mentioned that his album Love and Chaos is jointly owned by himself, Lynx Entertainment, and Empire. Because of this, any decision to sell that body of work would require the agreement of all three parties

“I think you sell your catalogue when your songs are of no value to you anymore then you take a big upfront money from it. Whatever they do with the song afterwards does not concern you. With most of my songs, they are still banging, so what kind of hunger would make me sell my catalogue?

“It will be very difficult to actually sell my catalogue because I don’t own… the only thing I can do is to re-record my own song because I own the masters to my song. If I need to sell maybe Angela or Wish Me Well, I would need Richie’s permission and Richie would need mine as well,” he explained.
