Senior Communicator for the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has criticised former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, questioning her integrity over her defence of dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Speaking in an interview on GHone TV on September 4, 2025, Owusu criticised Akuffo’s comments, condemning the process that led to Torkornoo’s removal from office.

He has described her remarks as baseless and hypocritical.

‘I pray no Chief Justice should go through this’ – Akuffo criticises CJ removal process

“If the former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo wants me to take her seriously and see her as an honest person, she must return the land she bought for GH¢7,000 at Cantonments,” Owusu stated.

Solomon Owusu accused Sophia Akuffo of showing selective solidarity, claiming her defence of Torkornoo was allegedly influenced by personal connections rather than principle.

“She knows the embattled Chief Justice in three ways: both are women, they attended Wesley Girls’ High School, and both have held the position of Chief Justice. That is why she did what she did,” he alleged.

He further called for state security agencies to investigate Akuffo’s tenure as Chief Justice, citing her alleged past administrative decisions, such as the controversial reassignment of judicial staff and alleged mishandling of internal disputes.

Sophia Akuffo, who also serves as a member of the Council of State, had earlier expressed disapproval of the process that led to Torkornoo’s removal.

In an exclusive interview with TV3, she described the proceedings as “an ordeal no judge should endure,” calling it a “rigmarole” that denied the ousted Chief Justice a fair hearing.

“I pray to God that no Chief Justice, no judge should go through this rigmarole again,” she said

She added that the process was handled as though it were a “treason trial.”

CJ Removal: Kweku Baako agrees with Sophia Akuffo’s argument that case was weak

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was officially removed from office on the recommendation of a five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang.

The decision was announced in a statement that cited Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines procedures for the removal of superior court judges.

“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, from office with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Prior to her removal, Torkornoo had been suspended in April 2025 after President John Dramani Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, determined there was a prima facie case against her based on three separate petitions.

The Pwamang Committee concluded there were sufficient grounds of stated misbehaviour to warrant her removal.
