Bernard Baidoo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the Akwatia Constituency by-election, has declared himself the winner of the parliamentary contest ahead of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) official results.

Speaking to the media after polls closed at 5 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Baidoo expressed conviction in his victory, stating that he could already predict not just the win but also the likely margin.

“The election, that’s what the win is. It’s a done deal. I can assure you. We have been in the game for a while, so we understand when it is going well for you and when it is not. I can tell you on authority that I have won the elections. What we are working on now is the margin of win,” he said.

Baidoo emphasised that his confidence stemmed from direct engagements with voters during the campaign period, adding that their responses and interactions indicated a preference for him.

“Even before I made it clear that I will win the elections, I never said so before campaigning. But after campaigning, I said it. Because these are people you engage and you can make meaning out of what they tell you,” he added.

When asked if he would accept a loss should the results prove otherwise, Baidoo, a lawyer by profession, affirmed that he would respect the outcome.

“If you lose, you lose. What will you do? I’m a lawyer and I don’t always win my cases. Sometimes you are so confident but the judge rules against you and you are obliged to thank the judge. That is the kind of person I am. But in this particular instance, I can assure you it is a win,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwah, has predicted a decisive victory for the NDC candidate.

In a post on social media, Dankwah projected that Baidoo would secure at least 53% of the total votes cast, while Solomon Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would struggle to exceed 47%.

Dankwah further stated that Asumadu had no realistic path to victory in the contest.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the sitting NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency, who passed away on July 7, 2025, after a short illness.

Three candidates are vying for the seat: Bernard Baidoo (NDC), Solomon Asumadu (NPP) and Owusu Patrick, an independent candidate.
