Since the early 2020s, rap acts from various countries, especially Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania, have gathered to showcase their lyrical prowess at the annual Hennessy Cypher.

Over the years, the Cypher has become a testing ground for determining the best rap talents from across the continent.

The 2025 edition, produced by South Africa’s Kabza De Small, featured an explosive lineup: Joey B (Ghana), Blaqbonez (Nigeria), Femi One (Kenya), Ms Banks (Nigeria), and Javia (Tanzania).

    Some comments include:

“You see that thing called Hip hop, leave it to Ghanaians.”

“Joey B is like that overqualified kid in a classroom,” another said.
