Seattle Sounders produced a masterclass at Lumen Field, stunning Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami 3-0 in the 2025 Leagues Cup final on Monday, September 1, 2025.
The result denied Messi a 47th career title and crowned Seattle as the new kings of North America.
Alex Roldan was at the heart of the victory, calmly converting from the penalty spot before setting up another goal as Miami collapsed under the Sounders’ relentless intensity.
By the final whistle, Brian Schmetzer’s side had added the Leagues Cup to a glittering trophy cabinet that already includes four U.S. Open Cups, two MLS Cups, one CONCACAF Champions Cup, and a Supporters’ Shield. Schmetzer himself became the first coach to win every major North American trophy.
But the night’s headlines weren’t just about football. Tempers exploded once the referee brought the contest to an end. Luis Suarez immediately rushed at Seattle’s 20-year-old midfielder Obed Vargas, grabbing him by the neck in a headlock.

As Vargas tried to break free, Sergio Busquets charged into the fray and punched the youngster in the face.
That flashpoint set off a chaotic melee involving players and coaches from both sides. Suarez, walking away from the clash, even got into a verbal exchange with a member of Seattle’s staff before spitting at him.
Security and officials scrambled to restore order as the celebrations of Seattle’s triumph spilt over into fury from Inter Miami’s beaten stars.
