L-R: Paul Scholes, Tony Yeaboah and Rooney have scored briiliant volley goals L-R: Paul Scholes, Tony Yeaboah and Rooney have scored briiliant volley goals

    GhanaWeb Feature by Benjamin Sackey

Legendary Ghanaian footballer Tony Yeboah is rated as one of the players to have scored one of the best volley goals in Premier League history among other greats in the game.

Other players who scored such magnificent goals in Premier League include Wayne Rooney, Pajtim Kasami, Paul Scholes, and Eric Lichaj.

    About Volley Goals

A “volley goal” in soccer refers to a goal scored when a player kicks the ball in the air, without letting it bounce, towards the goal area.

It’s a striking technique that requires precision, timing, and good coordination.

The Athletic celebrates 30th anniversary of Tony Yeboah’s volley against Liverpool

This feature highlights five volley goals regarded as the best in Premier League history.

    Tony Yeboah

The former Black Stars striker scored one of the greatest goals in Premier League history against Liverpool in 1995.

The goal, scored at Elland Road, secured a crucial 1-0 win for Leeds United against a strong Liverpool team featuring Robbie Fowler, John Barnes, and Stan Collymore.

That wasn’t the only memorable goal Tony Yeboah scored that season; he produced another impressive strike against Wimbledon that was voted BBC Goal of the Season in the 1995/1996 Premier League season.

    Wayne Rooney

The English legend scored an outstanding volley goal against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on April 24, 2005.

While it was technically brilliant, it was hard not to feel sorry for the ball, which was the victim of frustration and aggression bubbling up inside the 19-year-old Rooney.

Manchester United were 1-0 down to Newcastle at Old Trafford on April 24, 2005, and with nearly an hour gone, Rooney who was struggling with an injury and frustrated with the officiating of referee Neale produced a stunner.

Rooney took all his pent-up anger โ€” because he thought the referee was being too lenient on Alan Shearer โ€” and frustration out on the ball.

    Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes, regarded as one of the best midfielders in football, scored a stunning volley goal against Bradford City, helping Manchester United secure a 4-0 win en route to retaining the Premier League title in 2000.

The technique displayed by Scholes, and also David Beckham in other instances, makes the strike still stand out years later.

The goal received plaudits from football fans and pundits who were impressed with the technique.

    Eric Lichaj

Eric Lichaj netted an astonishing volley goal for Nottingham Forest against Arsenal in 2018.

Lichaj restored the lead for a Forest side led by caretaker boss Gary Brazil. The American defender scored a spectacular dipping volley from the edge of the area a minute before half-time.

The goalkeeper’s attempt to save the ball was foiled as he got stuck in the middle of the post while the ball rolled into the top corner of the net.

    Pajtim Kasami

Kasami scored a powerful volley goal for Fulham against Crystal Palace in 2014.

Sascha Riether’s floated pass down the channel was taken on the chest by Kasami on the right-hand edge of the penalty area, and in one fluid movement, he unleashed a stunning dipping volley on the angle, up and over Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni, into the top-left corner in October 2014.

The strike was nominated for the 2012 Puskas Award in 2014, but was beaten by a James Rodriguez goal for Colombia in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
