Educate Africa Institute (EAI) strongly condemns the chaos and violence that marred the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun parliamentary election, where Ghanaians were seen beating up fellow Ghanaians simply because someone wants to become a Member of Parliament.

This incident presents a very bad image for our democracy and undermines the peace we have collectively worked to build.

Equally disturbing is the conduct of the police, who could not handle the situation effectively, leading to a breakdown of order at the polling centres. We are particularly appalled by reports that a police officer slapped a journalist during the incident. Such unprofessional and undemocratic conduct is unacceptable and must be addressed immediately.

Educate Africa Institute views these incidents as a form of social injustice. Elections are meant to be a peaceful process where citizens exercise their democratic rights without fear, intimidation, or violence. Journalists must also be allowed to carry out their duties without harassment or assault, as they play a critical role in strengthening transparency and accountability during elections.

We call on the Ghana Police Service to investigate this incident thoroughly and hold any officers found culpable accountable. We also urge political actors to demonstrate leadership by prioritizing peace and the sanctity of human dignity over personal or partisan interests.

Educate Africa Institute remains committed to promoting peace, civic education, and social justice across Ghana and calls on all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles in our electoral processes.
