Ghanaian fashion designer, Jude Dontoh, has advised thriving Ghanaian fashion designers to collaborate with the right fashion brands if they want a successful career.

In an interview with GhanaWeb‘s Joseph Henry Mensah on May 8, 2025, he noted that fashion designers can project Ghanaian culture globally if they work with the right people.

“Collaborating with the right people, the right brands, and projects to make sure that our stuff is out there and also claiming that you are from Ghana. It is also important to be patriotic and let people know that you are from because that is where you were born. You have to put the country on your back,” he said.

Jude Dontoh added that despite fashion not being taken seriously in Ghana, things would eventually change.

“We are a growing community and there is always room for improvement. I think we are getting there. I had been designing in Ghana for 10 years before I got to America, so it is way better than when I started it.

“With growth and time, we would make a lot of waves. There was a lot of African representation at the Met Gala this year and worldwide… I think it just takes time but we have to put our heads down, keep grinding and we are going to be fine,” he added.

Jude Dontoh became a topic of discussion on Monday, May 5, 2025, after he styled legendary musician Lauryn Hill at her debut appearance at the MET Gala fashion show.

At the event, Lauryn wore a striking butter-yellow tuxedo gown which featured intricate embroidery, a sculptural train, and royal Ghanaian symbolism that celebrated Afro-spiritual elegance.

Highlights of their stunning outfits included the Benkyinie umbrella motif, a tribute to Ghanaian royalty, and a bold cerulean blue Hermès bag that tied the look together, paying homage to Hill’s legacy and feminine strength.
