Investigation into cybersecurity breach affecting 5,700 MTN customers begins

The  Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has launched an investigation into a cybersecurity breach that is affecting 5,700 customers of Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) Ghana.

According to the Ministry, it is working closely with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the Data Protection Commission (DPC), to assess the extent of the breach and identify the potentially affected customers.

A press statement released by the Ministry disclosed that investigators will determine whether the breach originated from the Mobile Network Operator, and urged customers to remain calm as they work to resolve the issue and provide updates to the public.

“This collaboration aims to establish the extent of the breach and ensure that necessary measures are taken to protect customer data. The Ministry will ensure that affected customers are protected per data protection laws,” the statement assured.

The breach, reported on April 28, has led to immediate collaboration with key regulatory bodies to assess and mitigate the situation.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding digital infrastructure and ensuring accountability in response to cybersecurity threats.
