Asante Kotoko have decided to boycott Asempa FM, over a denigrating report by one of its journalists, E.K. Wallace, concerning the death of their fan, Francis Yaw Frimpong, well-known as Pooley.
The host of the Sports Nite show on Asempa FM alleged that Pooley died outside the stadium as a result of a misunderstanding between the deceased and the main suspect, Braimah, who was furious and ended up stabbing Pooley.
He explained that after Pooley was stabbed at a ghetto, a tricycle driver named Sunsum took him to the stadium for medical attention, but unfortunately, the ambulance service officials were unsuccessful in saving his life, and he died.
The Kotoko management refuted the reports, arguing that they were meant to distort investigations into the case and sway public opinion.
Hence, the club have decided to boycott the radio station and ban them from covering any Kotoko activity for supposed unprofessional journalism.
“The management of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have with immediate effect, boycotted all channels of Asempa FM indefinitely and has also banned the media channel from covering any organized activities of the club, effective March 3, 2025.
“This decision follows the blatant disregard for professionalism, journalistic ethics, and integrity displayed by ‘Prof’ E.K. Wallace and the broader management of Asempa FM,” portions of the statement released by the club on February 3, 2025, read.
The Porcupine Warriors further stated that if Wallace had credible information, he should have briefed the police to aid the probe, rather than tarnish the deceased’s image.
“The said program was deliberately orchestrated to serve an agenda of shielding individuals connected to the gruesome murder of our beloved supporter, Pooley. Neither the host nor the management of Asempa FM disclosed the content of the program to the Ghana Police Service or any security agency before or after the broadcast, despite the serious nature of the case,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service are yet to conclude their investigations, as some suspects have been arrested for interrogation.
Pooley’s funeral will be held on March 6, 2025. The Ghana Premier League, which has been on suspension since the incident, will resume on March 7, 2025.
