Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and Atta Poku Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and Atta Poku

Sports journalist Collins Atta Poku has taken a swipe at Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher for disregarding the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a major tournament.

He questioned the football pundit’s objectivity in analyzing some football issues after claiming to have no knowledge of AFCON being a major tournament.

Atta Poku described Carragher’s remarks as disgraceful, tarnishing the image of the entire African continent due to his abhorrence towards a particular player.

“It’s actually getting embarrassing now, and there’s no way back for him in this discourse. How can you speak like this about a whole continent because of your disdain for one person? He set up Cole Palmer for nothing, and since then, everyone has seen through him,” he wrote on X.

During the post-match analysis of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on February 23, 2025, on SkySports, Carragher asserted that although Mohammed Salah, an Egyptian, excels with Liverpool, the lack of a major tournament for his national team could hinder his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.

“I think the problem is that he [Salah] is with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in a major tournament, or maybe doesn’t have a great chance of winning. I think it’s either the Champions League or a major tournament.

“Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr. and Mbappe right now, Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League. Liverpool will be in that conversation, but right now, Los Blancos are certainly the front-runners,” he said.

However, co-pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge quickly corrected him, establishing that AFCON is globally recognized as a major tournament.
