Taking a break from the gym and stretching out on the couch could help you to live years longer, experts have claimed.

In fact allowing yourself to kick back, relax and enjoy a snooze at home could add as many as ten years to your life, a new study has found.

Reducing one’s stress helps to bring down cortisol levels, which in turn can lower the risk of several illnesses including heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

In addition, watching sport on TV can be healthier than playing it, research conducted at the University of Kansas found.

As well as being a couch potato by day, the study found that a decent night’s sleep also helps to keep us healthier for longer, the Daily Star reported.

Likewise poor sleep quality can be a factor behind faster aging, the study by sporting analyst Playcasino concluded.

Experts found that animal species with lower metabolic rates tend to live longer than those that are more active.

The best long term evolutionary strategy may be to be ‘sluggish’, researcher Dr Bruce Lieberman said.
