Ghana legend Kwasi Appiah has revealed that he was inspired to take up the Sudan job due to the unrest in the North African nation.

The former Black Stars coach took over helms at the Sudanese national team in 2024 and has since made a significant impact on the country.

Appiah has qualified the team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, beating Ghana in Group F of the qualifiers for one of the tickets for the tournament.

Sudan are also top of their group in the World Cup qualifiers, above the Teranga Lions of Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“Qualifying for the Afcon was one of the targets I set for myself before I signed the contract, so achieving it was something that was on my heart,” Appiah told BBC Sport Africa.

“Another reason I signed was for the people in Sudan, because of the war back home. The players have shown a lot of dedication.

“Who knows, maybe through football the war might even come to an end. And that was something that made me happy.”
