Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata has opened up about the motivation behind establishing a football club in his hometown.

Born in Effiakuma, a suburb of Takoradi, Kinaata has had a stellar music career but has now ventured into football, setting up various clubs.

In an interview with CNN Africa, the 2024 VGMA Highlife Artiste of the Year expressed his desire to give back to his hometown and its people. As such, he went the extra mile to establish a football club.

According to Kinaata, this initiative aims to develop young players and equip them with skills for a brighter future. He also shared details about the teams.

“Effiakuma is a town in Takoradi. That’s where I was born, schooled, and did everything. It’s very significant to my life and who I am today, so I can’t leave them behind. I have a football team because I used to play football. We formed a team called Team Move FC.

“There’s the U12, U15, U17, and a second division side. They’re playing in the league, and the goal is to have someone recognize these players and push them to wherever they need to go. If possible, I hope they play in the Premier League and win trophies,” he said.

While acknowledging that the idea of being a source of inspiration for others brings pressure, Kinaata noted that it also motivates him to strive harder for his community.

“I feel happy watching them because, when we were playing, we didn’t have something like this. They look at me as their source of inspiration, and although that puts pressure on me, it also drives me to work harder. I’m happy to give them hope,” he further stated.

Since breaking onto the music scene, Kinaata has gradually become one of Ghana’s best songwriters. In June 2021, he became the first artiste to win the VGMA Songwriter of the Year award four times.
