The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has directed the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to immediately restore water supply to residents in Greater Kumasi and its surrounding areas.

This follows reports of disruptions in water supply since Friday, December 13, 2024, affecting key areas such as Bantama, Atonsu, Santasi, and Ridge.

The PURC, in a statement, described the situation as unacceptable, emphasizing that it violates citizens’ fundamental right to clean and safe water.

The Commission cited the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Consumer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which prohibits the denial of utility services without appropriate justification and review. Regulation 4 specifically mandates that utility providers must not interrupt services arbitrarily and must address challenges through proper channels.

The PURC has ordered the Ghana Water Company to submit a detailed report outlining the reasons for the interruption and measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. It has also instructed GWCL to engage with affected communities and provide alternative water supplies where necessary.

The Commission further assured residents that it will closely monitor the situation and take additional steps if needed to protect the interests of consumers.

For now, residents of Greater Kumasi are hopeful for a swift resolution as they await the restoration of this essential service.
