Popular Ghanaian media personality, DJ Slim, has firmly established that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) played a significant role in their own defeat in the 2024 elections, adding that they “scored too many own goals.”

Sharing his thoughts on the election results, DJ Slim pointed to several key factors, especially during the campaign that signaled the party was headed for loss.

According to him, the NPP’s ‘missteps’ were evident long before the final outcome.

“They were destined to lose these elections based on several factors. They scored too many own goals. The only brilliant thing that happened during the campaign was their ability to shift the narrative around Vice President Bawumia, moving him from an economic background to an IT-focused figure. In the final days of the campaign, discussions about Bawumia were no longer centred on economic issues, but rather on technology,” DJ Slim said on Hitz FM.

He also criticised the party’s unfulfilled promises, particularly pointing to the pledge to build amphitheaters for the creative arts industry, which he said was a glaring example of a promise without concrete action.

DJ Slim further emphasised that Ghanaians have evolved and have now become more discerning.

He said voters now are interested in issues and performance rather than party loyalty.

“This is a new era, the voters these days have different mentality altogether. I believe the number of floating voters in every region have increased a lot. People are discerning enough to vote based on issues.

“I could see some staunch NPP zones flipping to the NDC so it only tells us that people these days vote based on issues. They are not as traditional as we’ve been all to believe,” he added.

Despite his criticisms, DJ Slim acknowledged the NPP’s impressive campaign efforts, describing it as one of the most expensive and sophisticated in Ghana’s political history.

“Being fair to the NPP, I’d say they ran a very solid campaign. The level of their campaign will go down in history as one of the most expensive ever,” he said

On a positive note, DJ Slim also praised NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, calling him the most popular vice president Ghana has ever had.

“By far, Bawumia is the most popular vice president we’ve ever had,” he concluded.
