Sista Afia has raised concerns about a hygiene practice she believes deserves more attention among Ghanaian musicians, urging fellow performers to disinfect microphones before using them on stage.

The singer made the appeal in a social media post on Friday, August 28, 2026, drawing attention to the frequency with which artists share microphones at concerts, shows and other public events.

Sista Afia said performers often move from one event to another using equipment that has been handled by numerous people, including singers and speakers who may place their mouths directly on the microphone.

“PLEASE DISINFECT THE MIC BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH ON IT!” she wrote.

The musician acknowledged that it would be difficult to establish that illnesses experienced after performances are caused by shared microphones. However, she argued that the repeated use of the same equipment by different people makes basic hygiene precautions worthwhile.

“I’m not saying every sickness after a show comes from a microphone, but with so many people sharing the same equipment, why not take precautions?” she said.

Her suggestion is simple. Sista Afia wants artists to consider keeping microphone-safe disinfectant sprays or sanitising wipes in their bags so they can clean the equipment before taking the stage.

For musicians who have the resources, she also suggested carrying a personal microphone to performances instead of relying entirely on shared equipment provided at venues.

The issue she raised is particularly relevant to performers whose schedules involve frequent appearances at concerts, corporate events, festivals and other programmes where microphones can pass between several users within a short period.

Rather than presenting her warning as a claim that microphones are responsible for artists falling sick, Sista Afia framed it as a matter of reducing avoidable risks.

“Your health first. Disinfect your mic before you perform,” she told her colleagues.

Her post has also opened up a wider conversation about backstage and stage hygiene, an aspect of live performances that can easily be overlooked amid the focus on sound, lighting, crowds and the artists’ performances.

    See her post below.

I’m going to say something controversial, but my fellow artists need to hear this
PLEASE DISINFECT THE MIC BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH ON IT!
We go from show to show sharing microphones with God knows how many people. Everyone is singing, talking, breathing and sometimes literally…
