Former Minister for Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has denied responsibility for any financial irregularities highlighted by the Auditor-General in relation to the 2023 African Games.

The former minister responded to reports linking him to alleged procurement and expenditure breaches connected to Ghana’s hosting of the continental sporting event. According to Ussif, he cannot be held personally accountable for the irregularities cited in the Auditor-General’s findings.

Speaking on the matter, Ussif maintained that due processes were followed during preparations and organization of the Games, which were hosted in Accra earlier this year. He stressed that the management and execution of various projects involved multiple institutions and officials beyond the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The Auditor-General’s report reportedly identified a number of financial and administrative concerns relating to expenditure, procurement procedures and project execution tied to the African Games.

Ussif’s comments come amid growing public debate over accountability and transparency in the organisation of the event. Authorities are expected to further examine the findings as calls increase for clarity on the issues raised in the report.
