Ghanaian sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu has credited fellow athlete Benjamin Azamati for motivating him to pursue Ghana’s national 100m record after a standout performance on the track.
Speaking exclusively to Joy Sports, Saminu revealed that he shared his ambition with Azamati before the race, with the former national record holder encouraging him to give it everything.
“When I told Azamati I was going to make a shot for the national record, he told me to go for it,” Saminu said. “He said my dream of going pro would be boosted if I got it.”
The sprinter explained that he entered the race in top condition following weeks of intense preparation and was confident of producing a strong performance.
“I prepared well and felt good before the race,” he added.
Saminu also described the emotional aftermath of the race, admitting he was initially unaware of the time he had recorded after crossing the finish line.
According to him, it was only after the stadium commentator announced the result that he realized the significance of his performance, sparking excitement among supporters and teammates.
