The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously endorsed Gianni Infantino for re-election as president of FIFA for the 2027–2031 term, reinforcing Africa’s unified stance ahead of the next global vote.

The decision was reached during a meeting of CAF Member Associations on April 29, 2026, in Vancouver, Canada, chaired by CAF president Patrice Motsepe. All 54 member associations backed Infantino, highlighting the continent’s collective influence within FIFA.

Africa represents one of the largest voting blocs in world football, making CAF’s endorsement a significant boost for Infantino as he prepares for the 2027 FIFA presidential election.

Infantino, first elected in 2016, has already served three terms, including an initial mandate that began mid-cycle. Debate continues over whether that first spell counts fully under FIFA’s three-term limit, potentially allowing him to contest another four-year term.

During his tenure, Africa has gained from increased World Cup slots and expanded development funding through FIFA Forward programmes. The expansion to 48 teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will also see more African nations participate.

The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for the 77th FIFA Congress in Morocco.
