United States President Donald Trump has taken down an AI-generated image he posted of himself that drew swift and sharp criticism from Christian commentators who said it crossed a line no sitting president should cross.
The image, which has since been deleted, showed Trump dressed in a white robe with one hand placed on the forehead of a visibly ill man, a pose that many observers immediately recognised as a direct reference to classical religious paintings depicting Jesus Christ performing acts of healing. The backdrop of the image leaned heavily into American iconography, featuring the Statue of Liberty, a large US flag, fighter jets, an eagle, a nurse, a woman in prayer, and what appeared to be a uniformed soldier.
The backlash from Christian voices was immediate. Critics described the post as blasphemous and called it deeply inappropriate for a president who has consistently presented himself as a champion of Christian values in America.
Trump, however, pushed back on that interpretation when he spoke to reporters some hours after the image had been removed. He said he did not see it the way his critics did, claiming he believed the image was showing him as a doctor standing beside a Red Cross worker, not a depiction of Christ.
The timing of the post added another layer to the controversy. It went up just hours after Trump had published a lengthy public statement taking aim at Pope Leo XIV, who has been an outspoken critic of the military operations carried out by the United States and Israel in Iran. Whether the sequence of events was coincidental or deliberate has not been addressed by the White House.
The deleted post has continued to circulate widely in screenshots across social media, ensuring that its removal has done little to quiet the conversation around it.
