Former Bantama Member of Parliament and NPP General Secretary aspirant, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has stirred intense economic debate by claiming that the Ghana Cedi is currently “overvalued.”

In a video snippet shared on X on March 1, 2026, Kokofu argued that while he does not wish for financial hardship to befall the nation, the government must be prepared to take a drastic step should a new economic crisis strike.

Kokofu’s central argument rests on the belief that the Cedi’s current market strength may not be an accurate reflection of its true value.

He suggested that maintaining an artificially high currency value could leave the economy vulnerable.

“I don’t pray for an economic crisis but the way we’re going it will get there… and the only solution for the next economic crisis this country would go through is for the government to devalue the currency,” Kokofu stated in the video.

The timing of Kokofu’s comments is significant, as he is currently vying for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
