The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly (AEMA), Mr Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, yesterday distributed 70 dustbins and three skip containers to basic schools and selected institutions within the municipality.

According to him, the intervention is aimed at improving sanitation, enhancing waste management practices, promoting proper waste disposal, and ensuring environmental cleanliness across the municipality.

Beneficiary schools included St Kizito Roman Catholic School, Institute of Islamic Studies, Qubatul Hadra Islamic School, Nima 1 and Nima 2 Basic Schools, Kanda 3 and 5 Basic Schools, Kanda Estate Basic School, Kanda AMA Basic School, and Ring Road East Basic School.

Others were the 37 Military Hospital Basic School, Flagstaff House Basic School, Al-Waleed Comprehensive Basic School, Tafsiliya Islamic Basic School, and the Islamic Training Institute Basic School.

The beneficiary institutions comprised the Kanda Technical Institute, the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, the Nima Police Station, and the Nima Hospital.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Ibrahim explained that the intervention was necessitated by the absence of proper refuse disposal points in many public schools and institutions, which often resulted in indiscriminate dumping of waste.

“When schools do not have dustbins, where do they put their rubbish? That is why the assembly decided to procure these boiler bins and skip containers to support our schools and institutions,” he stated.

The MCE disclosed that out of the 70 boiler bins distributed, the Nima Police Station and the Nima Polyclinic received six each, while public basic schools received two bins per school. Other institutions received between one and two bins, depending on their needs.

He added that the three skip containers had been deployed to support bulk waste collection within the municipality.

Mr Ibrahim noted that the availability of the bins and skip containers would make sanitation activities more organised, as schools and institutions would now have designated points for waste storage before collection by assembly sanitation trucks for disposal at approved dumping sites.

“This will enable them to clean their surroundings regularly and keep their environments healthy,” he said.

He further revealed that the assembly was developing plans to extend the provision of refuse bins to households, following strong public interest generated after the announcement of the distribution exercise.

“Many residents have called to request boiler bins for their homes. We are working with our sanitation officers to develop a special plan to support households and link them to sanitation service providers,” he disclosed.

On waste segregation, the MCE indicated that the assembly would soon roll out sensitisation programmes to educate residents on separating waste at source, particularly plastics and other recyclable materials, to improve waste management efficiency.
