The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, a decision that has sparked debate due to his underwhelming record at the FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, a former manager of Real Madrid and assistant at Manchester United, will lead Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Despite his vast experience, his World Cup statistics raise concerns about his ability to deliver success on football’s biggest stage.

Across five World Cup tournaments, Queiroz has managed 16 matches, recording just three wins, five draws, and eight defeats. His campaigns with South Africa (2002), Portugal (2010), and Iran (2014, 2018, 2022) have largely failed to produce deep runs in the competition, with most ending at the group stage.

While he is widely respected for his tactical discipline and defensive organization, critics point to his limited attacking success and inability to consistently secure victories at the World Cup level.

Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately as Ghana prepares for the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in what promises to be a challenging group.
