Ghanaian fashion stylist and influencer, Charlie Dior, has called on the organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) to introduce incentives that would encourage celebrities to invest more in their red carpet appearances.

In a reaction to the often underwhelming fashion seen at major Ghanaian award shows, especially the TGMAs, Dior, in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Joseph Henry Mensah, pointed out that the lack of motivation is a key reason why many local celebrities don’t go all out with their style.

“There is no motivation for personalities to invest in their looks. If you want people to invest in their looks, is there a reward for that? Are you going to be giving out a prize or something?” he asked.

Charlie Dior compared the situation in Ghana to global red carpet culture, referencing how international stars like Rihanna gained widespread media coverage and brand opportunities through bold fashion choices.

“There was a time Rihanna showed up at a red carpet in an outfit and it was all over the place. She ended up featuring on Vogue Magazine and other platforms. These are some of the things that motivate people to invest in their looks,” he said.

He noted that in Ghana, there is little to no such reward system, making it difficult to expect stars to go the extra mile, especially with the current economic challenges.

“But in Ghana, there is no motivation from anywhere. So if a celebrity invests in his/her looks, it would all be for what? And with this economy, they are not going to do that.”

To address the issue, Charlie Dior suggested that the TGMA organisers introduce incentives for best-dressed celebrities.

According to him, prizes, brand deals, or even a prestigious title could help change the face of red carpet fashion in Ghana.

“If they announce that the best-dressed celebrities would get certain goodies, we would see a great improvement on the red carpet.

“So we need more push from the organisers, be it money, deals or even just the title of being the best dressed,” he said.
