2022/2023 AUCC students ‘shall be eligible’ for certificates under University of Ghana seal – UG clarifies

From left: Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of UG, & Vice Chancellor of the African University of Communications and Business (AUCB), Prof Abeku Blankson.

The Level 400 students of the 2022/2023 admission cohort of the African University of Communication and Business (AUCB), formerly the African University College of Communications (AUCC), have welcomed a response from the University of Ghana regarding their petition over the processing of their degree certificates.

The students say their position has been significantly strengthened by the University of Ghana’s response to the petition.

In the letter signed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof Gordon A. Awandare, the University stated that students admitted to AUCC under the affiliation arrangement “remain students governed by the terms and conditions of that affiliation arrangement for the duration of their programme of study.”

The University further stated that students admitted during the 2022/2023 academic year who satisfy all academic requirements “shall be eligible for the award of certificates issued under the seal of the University of Ghana.”

According to the students, these pronouncements vindicate their position that they remain entitled to certification under the University of Ghana affiliation framework.

They explained that the University of Ghana’s response reinforces their long-held position that they were admitted under the University of Ghana affiliation arrangement and should therefore be awarded certificates under that same framework upon successful completion of their programmes.

The students maintain that the matter is not merely about the name appearing on a certificate but about the protection of legitimate expectations, academic rights and the terms under which they accepted admission into the institution.

They insist that any attempt to substitute University of Ghana certificates with AUCB degrees for students admitted under the affiliation regime constitutes a breach of the understanding upon which they enrolled.

The students have also disputed comments made by AUCB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Abeku Blankson, during a meeting with affected students on May 22, 2026.

According to the students, Prof. Blankson suggested that pursuing University of Ghana certificates could take years and advised them to rather accept AUCB degrees.

The students reject that position, arguing that administrative convenience cannot override contractual and academic obligations owed to students who enrolled under the University of Ghana affiliation arrangement.

They further contend that their demand is not for a special privilege but for the fulfilment of commitments made to them throughout their academic journey.

They point to their admission under the affiliation structure, their academic records, examination arrangements and other institutional representations as evidence that they remain entitled to certification under the University of Ghana framework.

The students have therefore urged their colleagues to remain calm, vigilant and united as they await the final communication from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) following their petition.

They have cautioned students against misinformation and what they describe as attempts to misrepresent the facts surrounding the matter.

“We encourage all affected students to remain focused and not fall for misleading narratives. We are pursuing the matter through the appropriate channels and remain committed to ensuring that our legitimate academic rights are protected,” the students said.

The group says it will continue to engage relevant stakeholders and keep all affected students informed of any further developments as the matter progresses.
