French football is in mourning following the tragic death of 14-year-old Ousmane Diaby, a youth player for AS Jeunesse Aubervilliers, who passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match last weekend in Auxerre.

Diaby collapsed suddenly on the pitch and received immediate medical attention.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Dijon, where he remained under intensive care for several days.

Despite efforts to save him, the teenager passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

“It is with immense sorrow that we announce the tragic death of our dear Ousmane Diaby. He suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch, was resuscitated, and rushed to Dijon hospital.

“After several days of struggling, Ousmane breathed his last this Wednesday,” his club said in a statement.

Aubervilliers has launched a fundraiser to support Diaby’s funeral and repatriation costs, raising nearly €10,000 (£7,600) so far.

The club described him as “a child with a huge heart and exemplary upbringing” who helped his mother daily and volunteered with the younger players, particularly the Under-9s. “Always smiling, helpful, and respectful, he left an indelible mark on our lives.”

French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo has also extended his most sincere condolences to Diaby’s family and the club.

A minute’s silence will be observed ahead of Aubervilliers’ next U-16 match in Diaby’s honour.
