A 13-year-old schoolboy emerged as the surprise star when the Ghana Institution of Surveyors staged its 21st Surveyors’ Week and 57th Annual Meeting Maiden Golf Tournament at Celebrity Golf Club last Saturday.

Charles Amartey Sorgbodjor produced a composed display to win the Men’s Group A category, reserved for players with handicap indexes up to 12.3. He returned a gross score of 80 and, playing off a handicap of 14, secured a winning net score of 66 to finish ahead of more experienced competitors. The teenager, who said he has played golf since the age of three, expressed delight at edging seasoned campaigners and reiterated his ambition to turn professional in the future.

In the overall men’s competition, Michael Okyere topped Group B with a net score of 61 after carding a gross 88 off a handicap of 27. Tony Nitador placed second with a net 65, while Mathew Teye finished third on net 67 following a countback.

Stella Addo claimed the Ladies’ Open title with a net 51, while Esther Antwi won the Seniors Ladies division. Samuel Osei-Bediako secured victory in the Seniors Men category.

GhIS President Kofi Obeng-Ayirebi said the tournament forms part of efforts to align the institution’s activities with golf.
