A New Year means one thing for the keepers at London Zoo – a fresh new stocktake of the hundreds of species who call their wildlife park home.
Keepers were out in force on Friday, with their clipboards and cameras in tow as they tirelessly counted about 14,000 animals at the Regent’s Park attraction.
Zoological operations manager Daniel Simmons previously revealed it sometimes takes days to complete the full tally.
In 2024 the London Zoo welcomed a brand new reptile and amphibian habitat as well as fascinating inhabitants including 13 endangered mountain chicken frogs.
The annual stocktake, which lasts around a week, is a condition of the zoo’s licence – although in reality numbers are something staff keep track of throughout the year.
The information gathered is shared with the world through an online database called Species 360, which is used to help manage the worldwide conservation breeding programme for endangered animals.
