Luca Zidane has earned a debut call up for Algeria Luca Zidane has earned a debut call up for Algeria

Luca Zidane, son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, has received his maiden call-up to the Algeria national team ahead of their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Uganda.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper, born in Aix-en-Provence, France, previously represented Les Bleus at the youth level but has now switched allegiance to Algeria, the country of his grandparents.

Zidane is one of three goalkeepers included in coach Vladimir Petkovic’s 26-man squad for the decisive fixtures on October 9 and 14, 2025.

Currently on the books of Spanish Segunda División side Granada, Zidane came through the Real Madrid academy alongside his three brothers. He made two senior appearances for Madrid and later featured in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano.

After spells with Eibar, he joined Granada in 2024, where he has been a regular between the posts.

His international switch follows in the footsteps of several French-born players of Algerian descent who have chosen to represent the Desert Foxes.

With Algeria sitting top of Group G in the African qualifiers, Zidane could play a role in helping Petkovic’s side seal early qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North and Central America.

His father, Zinedine Zidane, remains an icon of French football, remembered for his brace in the 1998 World Cup final against Brazil and the infamous red card in the 2006 final.

For Luca, however, this call-up marks the beginning of his own international journey; one he will now undertake in Algeria’s colours.
