President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major step towards strengthening ties between Ghana and Zambia, revealing that the two countries have signed an agreement to allow visa-free travel for their citizens.

The President made the announcement while addressing the National Assembly of Zambia on Thursday, February 5, 2026, during his state visit to the Southern African nation.

According to President Mahama, Ghana and Zambia signed a total of 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at deepening cooperation across key sectors.

He described the visa-free travel agreement as one of the most significant outcomes.

“This afternoon, we signed 10 MOUs as a framework for cooperation, Prominent among them is the agreement to allow visa-free travel for all categories of passport holders between Ghana and Zambia. This is an important step towards the free movement of our people on the African continent.” he said.

Beyond easing travel, President Mahama emphasised the shared commitment of both countries to peace and security, noting that these remain essential for Africa’s long-term development.

“Peace and security are indispensable foundations for sustainable development, Ghana values its cooperation with Zambia in defence training, intelligence sharing, and peacekeeping, and we remain committed to strengthening collective security across our continent,” he stated.

The visa-free arrangement is expected to boost tourism, trade and people-to-people relations, while reinforcing the broader African vision of unity and integration.
