A journalist for British media outlet talkSPORT, Spence Oliver, has declared legendary Azumah Nelson the greatest boxer ever from the African continent.

According to him, the Ghanaian boxer’s exploits in his career, as well as, multiple world titles, are feats that sets him apart from his peers on the continent.

He backed his assertion with the golden belt given to Azumah Nelson by the World Boxing Council (WBC), to honour him as one of the greatest boxers to have ever lived.

Oliver made this statement during a sit-down interview with the legendary boxer, shared by Citi Sports on X on June 18, 2025.

Here is how the conversation panned out:

Oliver: Tell us about these belts – who and where did you win them?

Azumah: This is my first world title, won in Puerto Rico against Wilfredo Gomez.

Oliver: Gomez is one of the legendary boxers, and that was the WBC Featherweight title.

Azumah: Then I went on to become the Super Featherweight champion and won it again. The WBC gave me this gold belt, which is given to the greatest boxers in history.

Oliver: So, that recognition solidifies your status as one of the greatest WBC champions. I think it’s fair to say you’re widely recognised as the greatest African world champion ever.
