Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged President-Elect John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his promise to reset Ghana, emphasising the overwhelming public endorsement of his vision.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Monday, December 16, 2024, Bagbin pointed out the need for decisive leadership to tackle the nation’s current challenges and achieve long-term development goals.

“Your promise to reset Ghana has been massively endorsed by the voters, and you cannot afford to disappoint them, I trust Parliament will be a reliable partner and a gatekeeper to ensure a just delivery of that promise. Many opportunities have been unleashed, and many more myths broken by this victory,” he added.

Bagbin further acknowledged the vital contributions of the electorates in fostering a democratic culture through a peaceful election process.

“I am glad it has not been lost on you that this house stands at a critical juncture in our nation’s parliamentary history. So, you have responded to the notice of summons to attend this national call beyond the expectations of our people. I appreciate all of you for the acceptance of my call to reconvene Parliament today,” he noted.

The Speaker also praised the leadership displayed by both President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, as well as Vice President-Elect Professor Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, for securing decisive mandates in the general election.

He spoke about the importance of the lessons learned from any electoral challenges, particularly concerning the collation process, and expressed optimism for steps to improve Ghana’s electoral system.

“Despite these drawbacks, the spirit of cooperation and respect exhibited by the majority of voters and political leaders reflects the resilience and maturity of our democracy. Let us acknowledge, appreciate, and celebrate this achievement and use it as a solid foundation stone for continuous dialogue and collaboration as we work together to build the Ghana we want,” he noted.

The session marks Parliament‘s return following the conclusion of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections held on December 7, 2024.
