President-elect John Dramani Mahama has been urged to ensure that his appointments to the Ministry of Youth and Sports are made with the primary objective of developing sports in the country.

Abdul Salam Yakubu, president of New Edubiase United, is concerned about the lack of progress in football under Akufo-Addo and wants the incoming administration to chart a different path.

Abdul Salam Yakubu believes that the development of football hinges largely on a visionary and ‘serious’ sports minister and is therefore appealing to John Mahama to appoint someone with the knowledge and gravitas to steer football in the right direction.

“The current government appointed two sports ministers in eight years. What have they done? We need a sports minister who is very serious and can take our football to a different level,” he told Asempa FM.

Ghana football has struggled in recent years, with the Black Stars struggling to make an impact in football tournaments.

The Black Stars have, for the first time in twenty years, failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations after they finished bottom of Group F of the qualifiers.

In six games played, the team managed just three points, losing three and drawing three matches against Sudan, Niger, and Angola.

Otto Addo, the head coach of the Black Stars, has come under severe pressure following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

Reports, however, indicate that the GFA is willing to back him by augmenting his technical team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
