The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party in Akwatia (NPP) not to be intimidated by the ruling National Democratic Congress during the by-election.

Addressing some party members at the 40-day observation of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, at the Akyem Wenchi Durbar Grounds, he said, “If the NDC brings guns, face them squarely.

“Do not let anyone instill fear in you. Go out in your numbers and vote. The NDC has no shame as party. If we (NPP) decided not to contest the Tamale Central by-election, they should have done same at Akwatia”.

The late Ernest Kumi, a first-time MP on the NPP ticket, was recently at the centre of a high-profile legal battle over his parliamentary legitimacy.

His death comes shortly after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction tied to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.

In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found Kumi guilty of contempt after he defied an interim injunction barring him from presenting himself for swearing-in as an MP.

The court subsequently issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his failure to attend hearings and disregard for its authority.

The NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu is contesting the Akwatia seat against the NDC’s Bernard Bediako.

With only few days to the election, slated for September 3, 2025, both parties have intensified their campaigns.

Minority Leader, Hon. Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the NDC is shameless for contesting the Akwatia by-election when the NPP has already decided not to contest the Tamale Central by-election because of the tragic demise of the MP in a helicopter crash.
