A lecturer at KAAF University, Dr Eric Bempong, has criticised the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, over her involvement in the recent KNUST Senior High School viral video saga.

According to Dr Bempong, the minister has no legal mandate to intervene in the matter involving Assistant Headmaster Charles Akwasi Aidoo of KNUST SHS, who was captured in a compromising situation with a female student.

He argued that the Ghana Education Service (GES) has full authority and capacity to handle the issue without external interference from the Gender Ministry.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on October 6, 2025, Dr Bempong responded to the minister’s call for collaboration with the police to arrest the teacher in question so he could face the law.

He insisted that such an action does not fall within the minister’s jurisdiction.

“Something happened in the Oti Region. Has she done anything about it? Has she supported school guidance and counselling units to work effectively? What has she done to support education?” he questioned.

Dr Bempong further cautioned the minister against what he described as attempts to gain political points from the situation.

“She shouldn’t come and score any political point because GES can deal with the case. The GES I know can resolve the matter. You are crisscrossing from your ministry to another ministry to do what there?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Charles Akwasi Aidoo has been removed from the school following the circulation of the viral video on social media.

In a statement issued on September 29, 2025, the Ghana Education Service (GES) stated that it had taken the matter seriously and acted swiftly to protect the integrity of the teaching profession and ensure the welfare of students.

According to the statement, Aidoo has been barred from accessing the school premises while the investigation continues. The Service explained that the decision was necessary to safeguard a safe learning environment for students and to protect the institution’s credibility.

The GES assured parents, students, and the general public that due process would be followed, stressing that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken in line with its code of conduct.

“The GES remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and child protection in all our schools. We strongly condemn any acts that compromise the safety, dignity, and well-being of students,” the statement read.

The Service reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the teaching profession and emphasised that misconduct of any kind would not be tolerated.
