The Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, has dismissed claims that President Mahama’s visit to the Black Stars’ camp contributed to their impressive performances.

Before their two crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying games against Chad and Madagascar on March 21 and 24, 2025, respectively, the Black Stars had endured a prolonged winless streak, with their last victory dating back to June 2024.

With World Cup qualification on the line, the Black Stars needed to deliver their best efforts to secure wins in both matches.

In a bid to motivate the players several prominent figures, including the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams and MPs on the sports committee of Parliament visited the team.

The most notable visitor, however, was President John Dramani Mahama, who addressed the players ahead of the game against Chad and encouraged them to give their all.

Ultimately, the Black Stars achieved resounding victories, defeating Chad 5-0 and Madagascar 3-0.

Amidst the celebrations, some Members of Parliament credited the team’s success to President Mahama’s visit.

Osei-Asare, however, disagreed with these claims, stating that significant efforts had already been made prior to the president’s visit during parliamentary discussions.

“It is not just about what we see. There are many things that happen behind the scenes. So, I expect that we don’t simply attribute the team’s success to the president’s visit,” she said.

The MP further argued that the players likely received guidance from their fathers before the games.

“They all have fathers, and I believe that before they left home, their fathers also gave them advice. It was not the president’s words alone that led to their victories,” she added.
