Retired Ghanaian boxer Brimah Kamako, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has taken charge of the Bukom astroturf as its caretaker, daring residents to report him to President John Dramani Mahama.

The former boxer has taken over the facility, which was previously managed by a committee appointed in 2024.

Speaking on Max TV, Bukom Banku stated that he was born and raised in Bukom, and as such, no one can force him to relinquish control of the astroturf.

He confirmed that, as part of his role, he collects fees from individuals who intend to use the facility, with payments made directly to him.

“I’m from Bukom, and no one can bully me because of the astroturf. I’m the caretaker. If you like, go and tell President John Mahama, the Vice President, or the MP. They pay directly to me because I’m the caretaker,” he said.

When asked why he had seemingly taken over a role meant for the assembly, he explained that the primary duty of assembly members is to ensure cleanliness in the community.

“This issue has nothing to do with the assemblyman. The assemblyman cannot be the caretaker of the astroturf. His job is to clean the gutters and clear refuse to keep the community clean.”

He also clarified that all funds received from the use of the astroturf are strictly for its maintenance, emphasizing that it is a community-owned facility.

“I use the money to maintain the turf because it belongs to the community. It is a community park, so someone must be in charge—but not just anybody.”

The Bukom astroturf was commissioned in 2020 after the previous government transformed the original sandy park into a modern facility as part of its sports infrastructure development agenda.

However, by 2022, the pitch had deteriorated, with residents blaming the government for rushing its construction.

The park was renovated in 2024, with an administrative office added.
