Ghanaian socialite, Debora Vanessa popularly known as Sister Debby, has expressed dissatisfaction with the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, following a recent comment he made regarding the legalisation of the anti-LGBTQ bill.

In a post shared on X on November 13, 2024, Sister Debby labelled Asiedu Nketiah a hypocrite for criticising Akufo-Addo’s refusal to sign the bill brought before him.

To support her claim that Asiedu Nketiah is a hypocrite, Sister Debby pointed to a past incident during his 2015 visit to Germany, where he wore a women’s fur coat on an official trip.

She argued that Asiedu Nketiah wore women’s clothing on that occasion, but now thinks he has the moral right to condemn LGBTQ+ activities.

“A Ghanaian man who in 2015 wore a women’s coat during an official visit to Germany wants an anti-LGBTQ bill that will jail people for cross-dressing to become law. Hypocrisy!” she posted on X.

    Background

Asiedu Nketiah recently criticised Akufo-Addo at an NDC campaign rally in Kumasi, accusing him of hesitating to sign the anti-LGBTQI bill.

The NDC National Chairman stated that religious leaders in Ghana, including Muslims, have expressed strong opposition to homosexuality, and that the NDC had introduced the anti-LGBTQ bill to address this issue.

“The NDC has shown its disapproval of homosexuality in the country, which is why we introduced a bill against it. Even Muslims and other religious leaders are fighting against LGBTQ. But Akufo-Addo has refused to sign the bill,” he said.

Three years ago, some members of parliament led by Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George, introduced the anti-LGBTQ+ bill which after several back and forths did not get the needed approval from President Akufo-Addo.

Meanwhile, the bill is currently under contention as it has been forwarded to the Supreme Court for further deliberations.
