Actor and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo has sparked reactions on social media after he reacted to the police’s recent destruction of 61 bags of cannabis.

It could be recalled that on April 3, 2025, the Volta Regional Police Command burnt 61 sacks containing 40 parcels of the illicit substance in order to prevent the drugs from re-entering the black market.

However, reacting to the news, Dumelo took to his X handle on April 5 with the statement, “… yet cigarettes are legal in Ghana.”

His comment has reignited discussions around Ghana’s drug laws, particularly the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020, which permits medicinal and industrial cannabis use under strict licensing but bans recreational consumption.

While authorities defend the destruction as necessary for “crime prevention”, critics like Dumelo argue that the policy is inconsistent, given the known health risks of “tobacco”, which remains legally available.
