The governing body announced last week that former New Zealand Rugby CEO, Mark Robinson, will join the ranks from May, in a role that will be pivotal to implementing the organisation’s five-year strategy.
Robinson will lead a new division, responsible for driving and overseeing excellence on the field, reinforcing World Rugby’s commitment to increasing the sport’s global reach, value and impact, and maximising the flagship Rugby World Cups.
Regarded as one of the most respected leaders in the discipline, Robinson brings the experience accrued over six years at the helm of New Zealand Rugby, a period in which he helped strengthen the international presence of one of sport’s most recognisable brands, raising the global profile of the All Blacks and the Black Ferns and accelerating fan engagement, especially in the United States.
His track record also includes having been a member of the World Rugby Council and Executive Committee, giving him familiarity with governance processes and the strategic direction of rugby at international level.
The new chief will report directly to the chief executive, Alan Gilpin, and will work alongside world‑renowned experts such as Mark Harrington, chief of player welfare and rugby services, and Phil Davies, director of rugby.
Robinson’s responsibilities will include the integration of the key areas of match officials, game technology, laws evolution, player welfare and fan experience, to ensure that rugby’s pinnacle events, including Rugby World Cups, continue to set the standard in global sport.
The convergence of functions underscores World Rugby’s ambition to consolidate a comprehensive operating model that drives the sport’s reach and impact across all continents.
Robinson’s arrival coincides with other adjustments to the federation’s organisational structure to align it with the new five‑year strategy. –insidethegames
