The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, appeared before the Accra High Court (Criminal Court 4) on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to stand trial for alleged illegal mining activities carried out by Akonta Mining Company Limited.

Chairman Wontumi is facing criminal charges alongside another accused person, Kwame Antwi, who is reportedly at large.

According to the facts of the charge sheet sighted by GhanaWeb and statement by the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Srem Sai, he [Chairman Wontumi] failed to provide details of Kwame Antwi’s identity.

Antwi is said to be a co-shareholder and co-director of Akonta Mining.

Further details from the charge sheet indicate that, in his caution statement, Wontumi stated he has not been in contact with Kwame Antwi since they completed the company’s registration in 2010.

“The 2nd Accused Person (A2), KWAME ANTWI, is at large. He is listed as the other shareholder and other director of A3. When asked about the whereabouts of his co-shareholder and co-director (A2), Al states in both his police charge statement and investigative caution statement that he never saw or heard of him (A2) since 2010 after they both completed the company registration and other registration formalities,” portions of the statement read.

Additionally, the statement suggested that Kwame Antwi could be a fictitious name created for the company, adding that further investigations are underway to establish his existence and true identity.

“Investigations have, accordingly, established that A1 alone has since exercised absolute control over A3’s activities. Further investigation is ongoing to establish the existence and, if so, identity of A2,” it added.

Details of second case that led to Chairman Wontumi’s rearrest

Meanwhile, Wontumi has been granted bail in the sum of GHC15 million, with three sureties, two of whom are required to justify with landed property.
