A shocking incident has unfolded outside a hospital after a woman was hit by her own car as she tried to stop a thief from stealing it.

The woman had just got out of the car and was walking her husband to the entrance of a Melbourne hospital on Kangan Drive in Berwick when a man jumped into the driver’s seat.

Police said the man had left the hospital moments earlier before trying to steal the 66-year-old’s car on Wednesday morning at 10.45am.

The Upper Beaconsfield woman tried to stop him from driving off but was hit by her moving car and was rushed to a Melbourne hospital in a critical condition.

The man and her 2012 brown Ford Territory, with the registration DEX 581, have yet to be located.

Police are appealing for public assistance and urge anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage or information to come forward.

    More to come.
