Wolves are expected to appoint Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards as their new boss on a three-and-a-half-year deal, according to reports.

The Black Country club have agreed a compensation fee in the region of £2million with Middlesbrough for the 42-year-old, according to The Athletic.

Edwards, who joined the Championship club less than five months ago, is understood to be travelling to the Midlands tomorrow to sign his contract and finalise discussions over his coaching staff.

It means the Welshman could be in the dugout at Molienux on Saturday as Wolves, who are winless this Premier League season, take on Crystal Palace.

Edwards returns to the club almost nine years after he enjoyed a brief spell in charge as an interim manager. He also made north of 100 appearances for Wolves during his four years there as a player.

Since leaving the club in 2016, he’s gone on to enjoy spells as manager of Forest Green, Watford and most notably Luton Town.

Wolves are set to appoint Rob Edwards as their new manager on a three-year deal

He helped the Hatters to the Premier League during his three years at Kenilworth Road but their stay in the top flight lasted just the solitary season. Edwards left the club following year with them languishing dangerously close to relegation.

Edwards took over Middlesbrough in June, signing a three-year deal to take over from former Man United midfielder Michael Carrick.

However just a few short months later and his stay in the north-east looks all but over. He’s set to leave ‘Boro with them sitting second in the Championship behind only Coventry City.

He was stood down by the club yesterday from their game against Birmingham City after showing an interest in the vacancy at Wolves.

Middlesbrough announced their ‘disappointment’ in Edwards in a statement release before the match.

It read: ”Middlesbrough Football Club have, subject to the completion of an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, given head coach Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolves.

‘We initially rejected an approach from Wolves on the basis that Rob signed a three-year contract with MFC less than six months ago.

‘Following discussions with Rob we were disappointed to learn that he wanted to speak with Wolves regarding their head coach vacancy. We have now agreed terms with Wolves, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork.

‘First team coaches Adi Viveash and Harry Watling, and Academy manager Craig Liddle, will take charge of team affairs for Saturday’s game against Birmingham City at the Riverside.’

He takes over a Wolves side devoid of confidence who sit bottom of the Premier League table on just two points.

They sacked Portuguese boss Vitor Pereira last week just weeks after he agreed to sign a new deal keeping him at the club for three more years.

Wolves’ Under-21 head coach James Collins and his Under-18 counterpart took charge of the club’s visit to Chelsea on Saturday evening, a fixture which they lost 3-0.

If appointment promptly, Edwards will now have two weeks to work with his squad over the international break before fixtures against Palace, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Man United.
