WOI Joseph Ashitey Hammond, Ghana’s last surviving veteran of the historic 28th February 1948 Crossroads shooting, was honoured with a grand centenary celebration on Friday, July 25, 2025. The event, held at Burma Hall in Accra’s Burma Camp, marked not only his 100th birthday but a century of resilience, national service, and enduring legacy.

Witness to history, beacon of peace

WOI Hammond is the only living eyewitness to the tragic 1948 shooting that claimed the lives of Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey. That moment became a flashpoint in Ghana’s struggle for independence, and Hammond’s survival has made him a treasured national figure, embodying the spirit of patriotism and peace.

A yearlong celebration of a national hero

This landmark centenary was the culmination of months-long activities organized by the Joseph Ashitey Hammond Foundation in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces. The celebrations began in February with a nationwide press campaign, followed by a peace walk, Veterans Football Cup, and a public lecture at the University of Ghana. Each event underscored the values of global solidarity and service that define Hammond’s life.

Burma Hall lights up with tradition, culture, and honour

The main ceremony, hosted by broadcaster Kafui Dey, brought together distinguished personalities from traditional, political, and military institutions. Dignitaries in attendance included:

    • Ga Abola Tunma WE Dzaasetse Nii Ayi Anakonteh I (on behalf of the Ga Mantse)
    • AVM F.A. Asante (Ghana Armed Forces representative)
    • Nii Okang Duamro Nmashie III (represented by the Klu Din WE Head and Royal Family)
    • Dr. Norley Ashitey (former MP for Ledzokuku)
    • Hon. Afriyie Ankrah (representing the President of Ghana)
    • Lt. Gen. Obed Boamah Akwa (Rtd.)
    • Ashitey Royal Family elders and members

A celebration of culture and community

The centenary celebration featured electrifying cultural displays by the Tordey Dancers and moving spoken word performances by poets Albert Amafu and Abednego Nii Kwardey Ntreh. Chiefs, queen mothers, and dignitaries from Accra, Jamestown Noyaakpee, and the Tema Eco Museum lent their presence to honour Hammond’s life of service.

The entire event was broadcast live on GTV, offering Ghanaians and the global community a chance to witness this powerful moment in the country’s living history.

A legacy for the next generation

WOI Joseph Ashitey Hammond’s 100-year journey stands as a testament to Ghana’s path to independence, the sacrifices made by servicemen, and the power of peace. His story continues to inspire veterans, youth, and peace advocates around the world.

His autobiography is available for purchase via Amazon. To learn more about his work and advocacy, visit the Joseph Ashitey Hammond Foundation.
